Permanent Secretary Receives Special Envoy Of The United Nations Secretary General On Youth

Permanent Secretary Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye on Monday, 22 August, 2016 hosted in his office, the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary General on Youth, Mr. Ahmad Alhendawi.

Ambassador Enikanolaiye informed the visiting envoy that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is responding to the youth bulge by providing the enabling environment for youth empowerment, through the provision of gainful employment, skills acquisition and capacity building. He noted specifically that Nigeria’s youth population is about 50% of its entire population.

The Permanent Secretary charged the Special Envoy to work towards the establishment of a specialized United Nations Agency to specifically deal with youth matters. This, he explained will make for better coordination in the activities of the United Nations that directly affect the youth.

The courtesy call which was at the instance of the UN Special Envoy was part of Mr. Alhendawi’s efforts to explore areas of collaboration and cooperation with the Nigerian government in support of youth empowerment programmes.
